With the new year upon us, it’s a great time to reflect on the year just ending and look ahead at what we want to create in 2011. If we don’t take time to evaluate and learn from our experiences, we are more likely to miss new opportunities or repeat our mistakes. Reviewing the prior year gives us a chance to connect the dots in our own business (and life) and to notice the pattern of changes from year to year. This process keeps us up-to-date with ourselves as well as the changing marketplace. I offer some questions and invite you to carve out a few hours of quiet time for this valuable practice. Counting your chickens before they hatch

I’ve done it. If you are a solo business owner, chances are good you’ve done it too: failed to market your business because you were counting on a client, or a project to be there.

If you haven’t done it, I sincerely congratulate you.

When I got busy with a big client, it looked as though the work would continue. I was so busy, and felt so optimistic about my prospects for future projects, that I neglected to promote my own business. Read more

Celebrating imperfection

Have you ever gotten paralyzed by trying to make something perfect? I have: it took forever to put up my own web site.

My web site is an experiment. It is small and simple. We used WordPress software so that I can easily update it as it continues to evolve. I’m having fun doing it.

But perfect it ain’t, and I’m not sure any web site is ever truly finished. It’s the nature of the online world to continue to change and be updated, and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. Read more

On being my own client

I finally did it: I launched my own web site.

Not big news to the world, but for Blue Horse Marketing, it is huge.

After years of being the barefoot cobbler’s child, I am wearing shoes of my own making. I am relieved to have something to point to as my web site, while being hyper aware of its shortcomings, and how much work I have ahead of me. I’ll also admit to being just a little proud to have finally, actually done it. Read more
